General Gymnastics Activities

Whether you just want to have fun or are serious about gymnastics on a competitive level, there is a place for you.

The goal of General Gymnastics is to bring to all people, regardless of age, sex, ability/disability, the spirit and enjoyment of all that the sport of Gymnastics can offer to participants.

General Gymnastics is mostly non-competitive. General Gymnastics combines, modifies and utilises movement and activities peculiar to the other disciplines of Gymnastics (Women's Artistic, Men's Artistic, Rhythmic Sportive, Sport Aerobics).

It also includes other activities such as dance, acrobatics, callisthenics and aerobics which are performed by gymnasts mainly for leisure purposes.

General gymnastics also runs state and national festivals known as Gymfests, which in turn lead to participation opportunities in a world event held every 4 years for General Gymnastics participants known as the world Gymnaestrada, which attracts over 20,000 entrants and is a fun way to meet other people from other countries who love gymnastics as much as you do!

Also included in General Gymnastics is DISPLAY GYMNASTICS which includes exciting and colourful performances with artistic dance, aerobics and choreographed movements and is a challenging team activity for all ages and abilities.

Display teams across Australia meet every 2 years to share and learn new ideas during the 4 day Aussie Gymfest. Teams performing at the Aussie Gymfest can progress to the world arena in the World Gymnaestrada.

Gymnasts first entering the sport of Gymnastics will typically be placed in a GYM FUN or KINDERGYM class, dependent on age. Gymnasts may then specialise at a later stage in one of the more structured and competitive disciplines, namely Men's Artistic, Women's Artistic or Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics.
