Women's Artistic Gymnastics Activities

Balance beam...... the conquest of balance

A routine on the Beam should contain a combination of acrobatic elements, leaps, jumps, turns and gymnastic movements. The gymnast must use the entire length of the beam and vary the routine demonstrating elegance, flexibility and confidence.

Vault...... like lightning

Vaulting shows off the gymnast's athletic qualities, as the movement is performed after a run up of about 20 metres. Each Vault has a value according to its difficulty. The Vault should demonstrate clean movements with height and length, finishing in a controlled landing. Two vaults are permitted with the better score counting or the average depending on the competition.

Uneven Bar...... in praise of virtuosity

Swinging movements are predominant on this apparatus. The movement must be continuous and include movement in both directions, above and below the Bars. Release and regrasp movements are essential. The Uneven Bars are the most spectacular apparatus of the competition.

Floor Exercise......Lightness of being

The Floor Exercise, accompanied by music to enhance the performance, should combine dance movements, with tumbling and acrobatics. The whole floor area must he used with the routine being varied on mood, tempo and direction. This exercise is the public's favourite, as the audience can become involved in the routine by clapping to the music while watching the gymnasts fly, pirouette, tumble and leap high into the air.
